Canvas Art Book
This little art journal I made for some prizes for our Mountains and Rivers meeting.
The outside is made from canvas while the inside pages are made from good quality water colour paper they are blank ready for someone to enjoy the process of filling the pages with your art work.
The signature is sewn together with cotton for strength, it will take paint quite well, no need to varnish.
How I prepare the cover;
Prepare the cover by laying the book flat so that you have front and back cover showing. Give this two coats of white gesso. Dry. I usually use texture paste, applied through a stencil on the edge of the book, this gives it strength. (I place some scrap paper under the cover to keep the inside pages clean). Decorate in any way you choose.
I decorate the inside covers of the canvas with two coats of white gesso as I need them.
Some ideas I have used in my art books.
Just because the inside pages are made from water colour paper does not mean that you have to use water colour art work, these pages take other medium quite well.
I have used Inktence blocks, dry, on a dry background. Now use a wet brush or a baby wipe to brush/wipe the page all over. Some of the colour comes off on the baby wipe but that is okay. You may have to use warm white to block in your design if you have not used enough water to set the Inktence inks.
Matisse and Jo Sonja paints also work well on the watercolour paper for a background as well as painting a design with. I usually place a piece of scrap paper under the page I am painting the background just in case I have drips/ bleed through on the edges, especially if you are using washes, drips or watery techniques.
Most of all, Have Fun! I find that I am not as intense with my work even if it does not come out as I planned, I started painting this was as it was easy for me to do some backgrounds at home & then take my pens & book away with me to work on while on a caravan holiday. I hope that you will use this art book in your own way, for whatever reason you would like, just fill it with little snap shots of Your Art.
Have Fun, Love and best wishes, Lyn.
