Mountains and Rivers folk and decorative painters group meet a few times a year for our meeting followed by a workshop taught by our talented teachers, most are well known folk art and art teachers, they have taught overseas and have been published.
Once a year our president of the group organises a weekend away, in May, three days of painting, fun and friendship. Starting with lunch on the Friday and ending on the Sunday with a farewell lunch, we enjoy three workshops, and a variety of competitions, one being on the Friday wine and cheese night we have to decorate an item (we all have the same item given to us before the weekend). This year we were all given a photo frame that we had to decorate any way we liked.
My frame was brown, so as the theme this year was celebrity cruse I decided to use paper to decorate it with. Much to my surprise I received first prize! The prize being a lovely watch.

The frame is a brown leather look, I used an assortment of luggage tags cut out and pasted onto the wood area of the frame insert as I thought I would be able to cover these with a photo for later use if needed.
The paper is an old background scrapbooking paper, 12" x 12" in a cream shade, I made a circle and drew the shape of the handle x 2 and the shape of a tag, before I cut them out I used Tim Holts distress ink pad in antique linen to ink small patches of the paper. I was unsure how the paper would stand up to the handle being picked up but it worked really well as the scrapbook paper was good quality.
I cut the circle in four quarters, the handle I cut two pieces and one tag. Using Raw umber in the Jo Sonja paint range I painted in the stitching with a liner brush on all pieces, I also painted the four 'pins' two on each side of the handle with the same colour adding some Jo Sonja warm white to the centre.
Using Jo Sonja al purpose sealer I glued the four corners to the front of the frame. One handle is glued to the front and one to the back making sure that they are even, I then glued the rounded edge of each handle together at the top and let it dry well. The handle was quite delicate while wet but once dried became quite strong, strong enough to actually hold the frame by the handle. The glitter dots I added using Tim Holts frosted lace, not so straight I am afraid, my hand shakes a little these days. Finally I added the tag, one side says Sailing with the stars, the other side says cruising with M and R 2015.
It was fun, a last minute effort as the frame sat on my table for weeks I knew how I wanted it to look but how I was going to achieve the look I wanted I had no idea, so the night before I went away I gathered stuff that I had and had a go, it was fun!
